Trader Joe’s Recalls Peanut Butter Due to Salmonella

Trader Joe’s is recalling their Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter after reports of salmonella poisoning were reported on Saturday, September 22, 2012.

The peanut butter was manufactured and packaged by Sunland Inc., a company based out of Portales, New Mexico. After the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked the salmonella outbreak to the peanut butter, Sunland Inc. expanded the recall to 76 other types of peanut butter and almond butter products they manufacture.  The recall expansion is primary for safety precautions as all the products were manufactured with the same equipment as the Trader Joe’s product.

So far, twenty-nine people in eighteen states have become ill, with more than three-fourths being young children. The recalled peanut butter was manufactured between May 1 and September 24, 2012 and sold at Trader Joe’s grocery stores nationwide and on the internet.

Sunland spokesperson, Katalin Coburn explained that Sunland’s food safety testing procedures had failed to detect any salmonella and the source of the contamination has still not been identified. A complete list of all 76 products can be found here on Sunland’s company web site.
