Federal Class Action Filed On Behalf of Victims of the Meningitis Outbreak

A class action lawsuit has been filed in federal court in Minnesota by victims of the ongoing meningitis outbreak that was caused by tainted steroid injections.  The lead plaintiff, Barbe Puro, does not know if she actually has fungal meningitis, but she alleges that she suffered headaches and nausea after receiving steroid shots distributed by the Defendant, New England Compounding Pharmacy, Inc.  The complaint states that as a result of being exposed to the Defendant’s steroid injections, Ms. Buro “underwent medical testing including medical blood work and laboratories, a spinal tap, and other analyses” and “suffered personal injuries, emotional distress and has incurred medical and other expenses…”

As of October 11, 2012, the Center for Disease Control reported that about 14,000 people may have been exposed to the tainted steroids.  So far, 170 cases of fungal meningitis were linked to the tainted steroids, including 49 reported cases in Tennessee, 39 in Minnesota, 30 in Virginia, 21 in Illinois, 13 in Maryland, 7 in Florida, 3 in Ohio, 3 in Minnesota, 2 in North Carolina, 2 in New Jersey, and 1 in Idaho. Deaths linked to the outbreak have climbed to 14.
