A Hidden Substance In Certain Weight Loss Products Could Put Your Health At Risk

Do you know exactly what is in that over-the-counter diet supplement? Probably not. Many consumers are not aware of all the ingredients in these products because the manufacturers and distributors of these unregulated supplements are hiding unsafe and potentially life-threatening ingredients that are known to cause harm and even death in certain individuals.

Recently, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (“FDA”) issued a public warning to consumers concerning two weight loss supplements, Fat Zero and Extreme Body Slim. Both products are promoted and sold through distributors and local retailers by Floyd Nutrition, LLC. According to the FDA, both products were tested and lab results revealed that they both contain a hidden substance called sibutramine, a controlled substance that was removed from the market in 2010 due to substantial health concerns. It is known to “substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate,” making it extremely dangerous for consumers with a history of heart disease and arrhythmia. Furthermore, according to the FDA, sibutramine “may also interact, in life-threatening ways, with other medications a consumer may be taking.” (See, http://www.fda.gov/.)

If you are taking either Fat Zero or Extreme Body Slim, the FDA warns you to stop using this product immediately, and to contact a health care professional as soon as possible if you are experiencing any negative side effects. (http://www.fda.gov/.)

A recent visit to Floyd Nutrition’s website reveals that the company has taken Fat Zero and Extreme Body Slim off their shelves. The company is not admitting wrongdoing, however. Instead, the company is blaming the insertion of sibutramine into those products on “a counterfeiter using our brand name to sell non-authorized products…reported to contain ingredients that may cause adverse effects to consumers.” (Emphasis added.) This claim has not been substantiated and appears to contradict the FDA’s public notices.

California consumer protection laws make it illegal to use false or misleading advertising, or claims of positive heath benefits, to sell a product that is dangerous to your health. Various consumer advocacy groups are now investigating filing claims against Floyd Nutrition on behalf of consumers who were, essentially, tricked into buying the Fat Zero and Extreme Body Slim weight loss products.
